Medicare pays for nebulizer medications and supplies.

If you cannot afford your prescribed inhalers, nebulizer medications could be a good option for you. Many patients prefer nebulizer medications over inhalers because they are much easier to use than an inhaler.

As of January 2012, the following nebulizer medications are covered by Medicare and provided by Rx Stat Inc. if you have a diagnosis of some type of chronic lung disease.

Albuterol Ipratropium DuoNeb (albuterol/ipratropium premix)
Budesonide Brovana Perforomist

If you use multiple inhaled medications the table below can offer some advice from a respiratory therapist about the sequence you should use to get the maximum benefit from the medications.

Do you need oxygen?

Many people with lung disease follow a similar progression of disease. They start on inhalers for shortness of breath. Then a Doctor prescribes a nebulizer as their disease and shortness of breath get worse. As the disease continues to get worse, Doctors will do some simple in office pulse oximetry tests or an overnight oximetry test to see if a patient needs to be prescribed supplemental oxygen.

Here are a few simple questions that you can ask yourself. If you answer yes to any of these, you should discuss oxygen with your Doctor or contact Rx Stat Inc. Rx Stat Inc. can arrange for you to have oximetry testing in your home to see if you need oxygen.

• Do you get short of breath getting dressed?
• Do you sleep propped up on pillows or sleep in a recliner because you feel like you can "breath better" that way?
• Do you wake in the morning fatigued or feeling a "little fuzzy in the head"?
• Do you get short of breath on short walks like checking the mail or going to the bathroom?

These are not symptoms of old age. They could be indicators that you are not getting enough oxygen at night or when you exert yourself. Many people feel fine during the day but actually need oxygen at night. When your body is sleeping, many of your vital organs slow down and your body's oxygen saturation levels will drop significantly. If you awake many times at night or wake up feeling short of breath, you should have an overnight oximetry test. It is a simple test that you perform yourself in the comfort of your home. You put a small clip on the end of your finger and go to bed. It really is that simple. Call for details. 1.888.648.7250
